Orange I happy that today is my day on the Orange You Glad blog hop hosted by Carla of Creatin' in the Sticks. Thanks, Carla! This blog hop gives me the opportunity to create something fun and to use my Crafter's Edge supplies for my July CE Design Team project! Woohoo!
The Crossover II from Crafter's Edge is an awesome cutter!
When open, it looks like this--included with it are the plates you see here--necessary for cutting with the dies.
This is the die set I used this time, Fruit Wedges, along with the 1 1/2" strip die.
This is the strip die set out of the package. They are almost flat and not sharp at all.
Here are the Fruit Wedges dies. I used all of them for my various fruits.
First, I made some glasses cases using felt for all the pieces. Of course, I forgot to take pictures along the way!! I used the rounded fruit wedges for the orange and the straight-edged wedges for the lemon. Then the seed die was for the apple and watermelon. One of my granddaughters snatched the watermelon case, so I made a 2nd so you could see it (actually, so I could have all four).
The pattern, called "Fruit Sunglass Cases," is found on National Sewing Circle's web pages. They machine stitched theirs, but I saw it as a perfect hand-stitching project. 😀
I blanket stitched the wedges, seeds, and half-circles on the flaps and then whip stitched the entire case together.
See how the fruit is the flap and the glasses slide in the pouch behind?
They're very roomy and could easily fit a larger pair of sunglasses.
I wanted to do more with the fruit wedges, so I made a table runner.
Again, I forgot to take process pics...
I made the orange, lime, and lemon and then decided I needed one more square, so I made a grapefruit.
I used 8" background squares and the 1 1/2" die to cut the sashing strips. Then I cut 3 1/2" strips for the border.
I used the applique as part of the quilting, but then I decided to quilt over the wedges too, so could have appliqued them before I quilted. No big deal either way, I guess.
Here is a close up of the quilting. I thought the triangles reminded me of the fruit wedges. I have used this triangle design before--it's from Christa Watson's 99 Machine-Quilting Designs.
The loops on the border are very common, but I made those because of Lori Kennedy's 25 Days to Better Machine Quilting book.
